Have you heard of Project Enlightenment? If you live in Wake County and have young children that are in Kindergarten and younger, Project Enlightenment has a wealth of resources for both parents and teachers of young children. They serve anyone in Wake County with kids in that age group, regardless of income. They are a part of Wake County Schools and have been providing services since 1969. Their office is located on Boylan Avenue on the edge of downtown Raleigh. If you have developmental questions about your young child, they offer counseling services and screenings that can point you in the right direction for resources. They offer a large lending library and even have a “Talkline” advice line to call for questions, totally free of charge. More details about the Talkline are available on their home page. Parenting is hard even when everything is “right” – but when things feel like they aren’t working as they should, please take advantage of these resources. They can help you rule out problems or give you direction on other professionals to connect with. They have many programs and workshops throughout the year that parents can plug into and learn more about effective parenting options.
All parents eventually have to think about Kindergarten and if your child is “ready” to participate in that environment socially, developmentally, and cognitively. Project Enlightenment provides resources and guidance on expectations for today’s classroom. This is great information for anyone (even outside of Wake County) to see if your child is ready!
